Webinar Recap: Reflecting on the Evolution of Insight Communities

At Recollective, we’re constantly working to bring you tools, knowledge and conversations that drive impactful research. Recently, we hosted a fireside chat with industry leaders Lenny Murphy, Chief Advisor for Insights and Development at Greenbook, and Laura Pulito, Recollective’s VP of Research, where they revisited their 2019 discussion on the future of insight communities. Their conversation explored how technology has shifted the landscape for researchers, enhancing engagement and data synthesis and looked forward to exciting new developments.

Here's a closer look at what was covered during the discussion, key takeaways about what is shaping our industry and what it means for insight professionals moving forward.

Transforming Insight Communities: Past and Present

When Laura and Lenny first came together four years ago, insight communities were primarily about building relationships with participants over time. Today, these communities have evolved from rigid, project-specific formats to more dynamic, adaptive “hubs” that foster better engagement. Both speakers discussed how technology now enables researchers to connect even more meaningfully with participants, adapt on the fly and draw out richer insights.

Lenny emphasized the importance of “meeting people where they are,” highlighting how today’s tools prioritize user experience and make it easier to reach specific groups across diverse platforms. Laura noted how Recollective’s platform is designed with these engagement needs in mind—making it easy for users to create studies that feel authentic, intuitive and participant-centric.

The Role of AI: Opening New Possibilities for Researchers

One of the most exciting developments since their last chat is the rise of AI, which has transformed the way researchers approach data synthesis and analysis. Laura shared how with Recollective’s new AI features, researchers don’t have wait to do their analysis until they are out of field - they are able to ask questions, compare groups and dive deeper into themes that they are hearing while studies are in field. This real-time capability helps researchers adapt to participant feedback instantly, making the whole process more agile.

Lenny added that AI isn’t just making processes faster—it’s changing how researchers think. “The ability to automate grunt work frees researchers to be more strategic,” he shared. In fact, using AI tools to synthesize and structure data means researchers can spend less time on manual tasks and more time crafting insights that drive decision-making.

Fostering Engagement: Putting People First

Lenny and Laura agreed that today’s insights platforms need to go beyond data collection. Effective insight communities should build authentic connections with participants. Lenny suggested that platforms could use AI-powered moderation to sustain engagement and provide participants with experiences that feel meaningful. Laura echoed the value of this participant-first approach, adding that “Recollective prioritizes an experience that’s enjoyable for respondents and intuitive for researchers.”

This emphasis on engagement isn’t just about creating better insights—it’s about fostering a community where participants feel valued and researchers feel empowered to create studies that resonate.

Looking to the Future: What’s Next for Insight Communities?

When looking to the future, both speakers were optimistic about how insight communities will continue to evolve. They predicted that these communities will become the “intelligence hubs” of the industry—centralizing data and streamlining access to insights from multiple sources. Lenny noted that we’re moving into a world where “conversation becomes the new form factor for quantitative research,” powered by advancements in AI-driven analysis.

Laura highlighted how these changes open up qualitative tools to new users, allowing for a more democratized approach to research. By making tools more accessible to people without traditional research backgrounds, companies can bring more voices into the insights process. For Recollective, this means equipping users with the tools to create faster, deeper connections with their audiences.
